It is administrative, not adversarial

The hard part is administrative. Money in this business does not move to a person, it moves to a correctly identified claim, and most producers are owed money that nobody is withholding from them. It is sitting somewhere waiting for a form, a signature, or a split everybody agreed to verbally and nobody recorded.

The pattern repeats at every scale. A beat gets used, everyone is happy, the paperwork is “handled next week.” Next week the artist is touring, the manager has changed, and the person who knew the arrangement is not answering. Nothing adversarial has occurred and the money still is not moving.

The twenty minutes that decide it

Which puts the leverage in an unglamorous place: the twenty minutes after the session, while everyone is still in a good mood and still in the same room. That is the cheapest moment this will ever be. Every week you let pass makes the same conversation harder, and it does not get easier once there is money on the table to argue over.
