Origin stories in this business are more useful than they look, as long as you read them the right way.

Read them for the takeoff and they are all the same and all useless: somebody worked, somebody got a break. Read them for the years before the break and the shape of a career becomes visible, because that stretch is where the actual decisions were made and it is the part that gets compressed into a sentence when the story is told later.
